It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? is a meme hosted at Book Journey. A blog that I follow, Teach Mentor Texts, extended the meme on her site to include a weekly focus on kid lit and YA lit.
This is the first week I’ve joined the discussion, and what a great way to not only share book love and get suggestions from other readers, but Jen at Teach Mentor Texts has a great little widget that lets you first add a link to your blog before the comment stream starts. So, here’s what I’ve been reading this week. When you are done checking out my list, head on over to Teach Mentor Texts and join the conversation!
Currently I’m reading The Chosen One, by Carol Lynch Williams. Thirteen-year-old Kyra lives in a polygamist community called The Chosen. She loves her father, who dotes on her, even with the numerous children he has with his three wives. Kyra always accepted her way of life until she came across Patrick and the Mobile Library. Before she read only the Bible. Now she reads Harry Potter and Bridge to Terabithia. She reads newspapers. She has a crush on Joshua, the boy who wants to Choose her in three years, but there’s a problem. The Prophet has told Kyra that her uncle Hyrum, at least sixty-years-old, has chosen her. She will wed him in four weeks unless her father can talk the prophet out of it. If not, will Kyra leave?
I just finished Little Brother, by Cory Doctorow, a fast-paced thriller dealing with teens,
LARPing, ARGing, hacking, and abuse of power by the Department of Homeland Security. Check out my Abe Lincoln page for my review and the reviews of the eight other books I’ve read so far off of ISLMA’s 2013 Abraham Lincoln Award nominee list. For those in need of a wonderful, romantic, poetic YA read, pay special attention
to The Sky is Everywhere, by Jandy Nelson. I just finished that one and want to dive right back in and read it again!
Ok, what are YOU reading this week? Post it in the comments here, and post on Teach Mentor Texts. Then check out all the other YA/kid lit readers who linked/commented there as well!

1. Randy Wayne White: Tampa Burn
2. Matthew Caldwell: The Zamler’s Last Stand
3. Susan: Quiet: The Power of Introverts
Heading over to that other blog now …
Make that Susan Cain. Too many colons confused me.
Ha ha! I was wondering about that one name author!
I really liked The Sky is Everywhere! It’s such an uplifting “grief” book. I like your Abe Lincoln reading challenge, I should start doing that with the Ohio Buckeye list. Hmm…new project? Here is what I am working on this week http://wp.me/pzUn5-13b
I’m going to put The Chosen One on my TBR list; I’m fascinated by religious books. I’m currently reading all the books on the Cybils finalist list which will keep me occupied for the next few months at least.
I think there is a sequel to Little Brother coming out soon.
You’re reading a whole heck of a lot more than I am reading this week. (I’m grading papers for a graduate course I taught last week so my reading is limited to the papers I’m grading and the literature they wrote off of. Lots of kids books on my list this week. I just reread Pam Munoz Ryan’s Amelia and Eleanor Go for a Ride, which is an incredible picture book about a little-known story. Worth a look if you like history.
I’ve heard nothing but great things about The Chosen One, I hope you love it as well!
As for me…lots of audio this week and quite a few middle grade reads. Mostly I have too many and I need to decide which I want to pick up next.
Have a fabulous reading week and if you get a chance stop by There’s A Book to see what I’m up to as well.
